"For millennia, our ancestors lived across more than 35,000 square miles of the rainforest in present day Peru and Bolivia. When outsiders arrived in the late 1800s, thousands of Ese’Eja were killed and enslaved. As new waves of settlers changed the land, our communities resisted some outside ideas and adopted others. In 1970, the Peruvian government limited us to three settlements - a fraction of our original territory. Nevertheless, today we continue working to protect the rainforest, and with it, our way of life."
